Western Regional Cuisine
Vision: To increase sustainable demand and sales for local produce, wine
and cuisine grown and developed in the region, through business
development, marketing, value-adding and education.
Region Overview:
Orana is the largest and most diverse region of New South Wales, located in the mid-north west and comprising around 25% of the State. It has considerable strengths in value-added food processing, tourism, minerals and wine – agriculture dominates the economy.
It produces over $850 million worth of agricultural commodities per annum. The major towns of the fourteen Local Government Areas which make up the Orana region are Dubbo, Cobar, Lightning Ridge and Mudgee.
Orana is also home to a range of diverse and developing industries including aquaculture, goat farming and, importantly, viticulture. The region is traversed by a number of river systems, including the Macquarie-Darling, which supports an irrigation network covering 164,500 hectares.
Future development will focus on further value adding to the region's agricultural produce and substantial natural resources.
The Role of Western Regional Cuisine:
WRC has established monthly produce markets in Dubbo and an annual Food & Wine Fiesta. A drive to increase membership and develop brand awareness will be major initiatives for the WRC Committee.
It aims to provide marketing opportunities, networking, education and co-ordination for its members by facilitating and creating a framework in which their businesses can grow profitably.
Brand recognition of the food and wine of the Western Plains Region throughout NSW is the ultimate goal.
